COMMON NAME: Bitter sneezeweed
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Helenium amarum
FAMILY: Asteraceae
FEATURES: Annual herb 20 to 30 cm in height. Leaves linear, alternate, and numerous. Lower leaves
begin dehiscing as plant ages and plant flowers. Flowers yellow with spherical head of disk
flowers and loosely attached ray flowers. Outer ray flowers (looking as petals) are loosely
attached and fall off when disturbed.
DESCRIPTION: Common weed along fence rows, droughty pasture areas, and infrequently mowed turfgrass
or non-crop areas. While an annual, plant primary stem becomes woody as plant ages.
