Irrigation

IRRIGATION INSTALLED IN 2003

In 2003, all plots were split in half and a solid set irrigation system installed on the eastern side of the Old Rotation. Both irrigated and non-irrigated yields have been monitored since then. Irrigation is only used on the cotton, corn and soybean crops. Timing of irrigation is based on evapotranspiration estimates and crop growth. Since irrigation began, we have seen significant increases in crop yields from irrigation:

            Cotton. . . . . Positive yield increase 6 of 12 years (average = 22%)

Significant negative response 2 of 12 years

            Corn. . . . . . . Positive yield increase 11 of 12 years (average = 71%)

            Soybean. . . . Positive yield increase 12 of 12 years (average = 44%)
